Built on the main road into the village this house is set down low surrounded by a large garden. The house did not connect to the garden with living spaces located on the upper ground level. Our challenge was to connect the house into the garden, the drive into the house and bring all the living areas together. This involved a large extension room of approx 85m2 (the largest single space we’ve made in one house) that connects 5 different levels together including 4 external levels and a lowering of the existing basement to form useful spaces. The new space is double height with a very modest appearance to the street side using matching materials. To the garden side a more open modern look is adopted with a twisting zinc roof, a glass to glass corner and steel detailing connecting to the garden. The existing house was also renovated as part of the project with insulated render system, solar water heating, heat recovery system and new windows all installed.
