Cemetery House
Breathing new life into a derelict gatehouse shell
Located within a park setting, this former cemetery gate house had lay derelict for many years,
with floors and roof collapsing and stonework crumbling. Our project inserted a new modern
insulated home within the stone shell to breath new life to the building.
The proposal is discrete and subtle. The stone work has been repaired, the roof has been
added where it once was, and windows replaced. From the approach side the house looks as it
once did. However briefing required us to create more space to accommodate the large family.
To the rear, we have extended the original shell with a new timber gable mirroring the adjacent
stone gable and open plan living spaces with walls of glass to open to the enclosed and private
south facing garden. Though clearly modern, the extensions respect the character and scale of the original building.
This restoration project works with natural materials, slate, sandstone, metal, all in keeping
with the original house, whilst embracing modern technology with energy and sustainable
improvements.
